Description:
This session will give participants a chance to experience activities without the use of vision or with diminished vision. The focus will be on the type of communication that is necessary to effectively learn while using senses other than vision. Connection will be made to the education of students with visual impairments in the general education classroom, but the activities overall will give participants an opportunity to practice effective communication strategies including use of explicit language and concept development strategies. The session will be of interest to teachers who may at some point have students with visual impairments in their classrooms and to the general public to learn a little about visual impairment in the context of communication. Hands-on activities and discussion will be the focus of the session with some background information about visual impairment and communication strategies given at the beginning.
