Applied Learning through Service

Name: Applied Learning through Service – An Innovative Community Service Learning Pilot in Mechanical Engineering

Time & Date: Monday, October 25, 2010 4:00PM – 5:00PM

Location: Civil and Mechanical Engineering (CEME), Room 1202; 6250 Applied Science Lane

Description:
Come learn about an exciting community service learning (CSL) initiative that is helping to change the way UBC Mechanical Engineering students view the practice of engineering. By integrating multi-year CSL activities throughout their studies, students will work directly with community partners in structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development while addressing real community goals and priorities.

Delivered in concise, engaging segments, each presenter will speak about his/her unique perspective on the Mechanical Engineering CSL pilot, and how this innovative multi-year model could change the face of the engineering profession (see speaker bios below). The session will close with a group discussion, and will be followed by a short reception. Refreshments will be served.

Co-hosted by the UBC-Community Learning Initiative and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, faculty members, students, staff, and community organizations who are interesting in exploring models for applied learning through service will find great value in attending this event.

Refreshments will be served.

Speakers
Dr. Tyseer Aboulnasr, Dean of Applied Science
Professor Elizabeth Croft, NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering
Florin Gheorghe, 4th Year Mechanical Engineering Student
