Name: What First Nation Elders Say about Memory Loss and Memory Care in Later Life
Time & Date: 4:00 P.M. – 5:30 P.M., Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Location: Rm. 200, 2080 West Mall, Jack Bell School of Social Work
Description: The purpose of this colloquium is to present and discuss findings from recently completed exploratory research on First Nations’ perspectives on dementia. Our findings indicate that memory loss and memory care in First Nation communities has changed over time (from pre-contact to post-residential schools), including the causes attributed to memory loss in later life, and community responses to those affected. We will focus on two themes – Memory Loss and Supporting One Another – that are most relevant to efforts to enhance personhood and strengthen relationships in dementia care.
This will be a 45 minute presentation followed by discussion. Presenters will be Dr. Wendy Hulko, Assistant Professor of Social Work at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC and Qualified Health Researcher with the Centre for Research on Personhood in Dementia (CRPD) at UBC Vancouver.
