Location: Earth and Ocean Sciences – Main Building, 6339 Stores Road

Description: Presented by UBC’s Earth and Ocean Sciences Department as part of National Science & Technology Week, this Open House will interest pretty much everyone — undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, children, parents, and the general public. Join Earth & Ocean Sciences researchers and Museum interpreters as they lead hands-on activities and experiments, including:

  • Dig for real fossils!
  • Make your own meteorite impacts and see the cratering they cause! Learn about Extinctions.
  • Bring your own rocks, minerals and fossils for experts to identify.
  • Experiment with convecting fluids and learn about volcanic eruptions!
  • Learn about how landslides are predicted!
  • Make miniature tsunamis and other waves!
  • Measure earthquake magnitude and experiment with simulated building collapses!
  • and much more…

Interpreters will lead tours of the Museum displays; highlights include precious gemstones in The Vault, dinosaur fossils, a tornado machine, local earthquake hazards, and diamond exploration. The Museum is located at 6339 Stores Road.
