  • Missionary Printing Presses Exhibition: “The Iron Pulpit”
    Featuring materials produced on missionary printing presses in British Columbia between the 1850s and 1910s, this exhibition looks at printed materials in context of Indigenous-Christian encounters, colonialism, and print culture in the province. The exhibition is located in RBSC, on level one of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and is open to the public Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. A PDF of the exhibition catalogue, which includes an introductory essay, detailed item descriptions and a checklist of existing missionary printing press imprints, is available online. “The Iron Pulpit” was curated by Alicia Fahey (PhD Student, Department of English) and Chelsea Horton (PhD Candidate, Department of History).

  • TLEF Poster Display
    The Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund provides a unique opportunity for UBC Vancouver faculty and students to create and lead projects that will enrich and improve student learning experiences. A variety of successful projects are being featured in this poster display, which will be launched with interactive Oral Presentation session, in which grant holders present their projects and are available to answer questions.

    This poster display will showcase the different processes departments and faculties use to train their teaching assistants. It is intended to provide information to students who may be interested in becoming TAs, and it is also an opportunity for faculties to share information with each other about their approaches to TA Training.

  • First Nations House of Learning Cross-Cultural Understanding Series
    Building on last year’s Dialogue on the Indian Residential School System, a series of events will be held at the First Nations Longhouse to provide the University community a chance to learn more about this history, promote dialogue, and plan future initiatives. The series will bring together a diverse range of participants and presenters to foster cross-cultural learning. Events will include a presentation by representatives from the Musqueam Indian Band on whose ancestral and unceded land the University sits, interactive sessions with community organizations, film screenings, a lecture on Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Aboriginal Human Rights by Robert Watts, and more.

    This session is being offered in collaboration with the MITACS Step program. Mitacs Step offers a holistic, inter-disciplinary approach to professional skills development. The workshops that are offered provide practical tools in business, communications, and project management through experiential learning from industry professionals in an interactive environment, arming graduate students for success within or beyond academia.

These events include discussion forums, lectures, seminars, workshops, and symposia on topical and timely issues from every discipline.   • UBC Opera presents Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte
    Mozart’s tale of love’s vices is a timeless classic beloved by audiences the world over. Ferrando and Guglielmo enter into a wager withthe old cynic Alfonso to test the faithfulness of their two fiancées, Fiordiligi and Dorabella. What ensues is a series of cunning plot twists bringing into doubt everyone’s devotion to their would-be lovers. For the first time at UBC, the celebrated Vancouver Opera Orchestra under the baton of Czech conductor Norbert Baxa, brings Mozart’s beautiful melodies and memorable music to life at the historic Old Auditorium. Così fan tutte is Mozart and opera at its charming best.
