Description:

The presentation will be presented by Joanna E. Cannon, Ph.D. who is an Assistant Professor in the Education of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing program in the Department of Education & Counselling Psychology & Special Education in the Faculty of Education here at UBC. A description of American Sign Language (ASL) will be presented along with the history of the language. The parameters (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) of ASL will be identified, discussed, and examples of each provided. Videos of ASL being used in a variety of venues and for varied purposes will be displayed. Handouts of the ASL alphabet and a list of resources will be provided.
