Time & Date: 9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Description: Kevin Kecskes, Associate Vice Provost for Engagement, and Director for Community-University Partnerships at Portland State University, will lead UBC instructors in an interactive workshop focused on the role of community engaged pedagogies, including community service learning (CSL), in preparing students for work in the 21st Century. This workshop will place UBC’s commitment to community-university engagement and CSL in a broader national and international context. In addition, the workshop will enable instructors to either improve a syllabus for a course with a CSL component or integrate new CSL experiences into a syllabus. Instructors new to CSL, as well as those with experience in the pedagogy are encouraged to attend. Bring the syllabus you want to work on.

Kecskes was the Director of Service-Learning at Washington Campus Compact, and the Program Director of the Western Region Campus Compact Consortium. He served three years in leadership and program development positions with AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps in Charleston, SC. Kevin co-founded the Boston College International Volunteer Program and has spent a dozen years working, serving, and studying in the developing world, primarily in Latin America and Asia. His recent publications focus on the nexus between cultural theory and community-campus partnerships, faculty and institutional development for civic engagement, student leadership development, ethics and community-based learning, and service-learning impacts on community partners.
